Defines a constant 90° beam deviation regardless of the prism's orientation. This invariance makes them ideal for precision alignment and surveying applications.

A penta prism is used to deviate a light beam by 90 degrees. It neither inverts nor reverses the image. Penta prisms are extremely useful in alignment systems because they define a right angle with great precision, independent of the angle of incidence. A light ray entering one face undergoes two reflections inside the prism for a total of 270 degrees, and then exits from an adjacent face at an exact 90-degree angle. Operating as a turning mirror, the penta prism is insensitive to alignment.
